Is the commute from Greenwich or Darien to NYC really that different?
No — not enough to build your home search around. Both towns sit on the Metro-North New Haven Line with express and peak-hour service into Grand Central, and the door-to-door difference for most trains comes down to minutes, not an extra hour of your day. The real decision between Greenwich and Darien comes down to town size, price point, and day-to-day lifestyle, not train schedules.

Why Buyers Lead With Commute Time — And Why It's the Wrong First Filter
Almost every NYC buyer I work with starts the same way.
They pull up a map, look at Greenwich and Darien, and want to know which one gets them to Manhattan faster.
It's a reasonable question. You're leaving the city, work still matters, and you want to know what your actual day looks like after the move.
But here's what I tell clients in that first conversation: the commute alone usually doesn't decide it.
Both Greenwich and Darien run along the Metro-North line, both keep you connected to Manhattan, and both can work for a buyer trying to balance access with a different pace of life. Once buyers see that the train doesn't split the two towns apart, the conversation moves to what actually should.
What the Metro-North Numbers Actually Show
Check the current timetable before you lock in a schedule — Metro-North adjusts service periodically — but as a general rule:
- Greenwich sits closer to the city, and its express trains into Grand Central typically land in a similar window to Darien's fastest peak service.
- Darien is a few stops further out, but its express trains are timed to close most of that gap during rush hour.
- Off-peak and local trains widen the difference in both directions, so your actual commute depends more on which trains you catch than which town you live in.
In my experience, once buyers see the real numbers side by side, the "which commute is faster" question mostly answers itself: close enough that it shouldn't be the tiebreaker.

So What Should Actually Decide Greenwich vs. Darien?
If the train isn't the deciding factor, here's what I walk clients through instead:
- Town size and variety. Greenwich is larger and more varied — backcountry estates, the walkable downtown Avenue, and coastal neighborhoods like Old Greenwich, Riverside, and Cos Cob all live under one town name. Darien is smaller and more uniform, which some buyers prefer for its simplicity.
- Schools. Both districts are strong, but the fit depends on whether you want a larger system with more program variety (Greenwich) or a tighter, smaller-scale district (Darien).
- Price point and inventory. Greenwich's range is wider — you can find entry points that don't exist in Darien, alongside its highest end. Darien tends to run in a narrower, consistently higher band per square foot.
- Day-to-day feel. Downtown Greenwich has more restaurants, shops, and weekend energy. Darien is quieter and more residential, even close to its own downtown.
The clients I work with who are happiest a year later are the ones who picked based on this list — not the ones who picked based on a five-minute train difference.
If you're still early in comparing the two, this breakdown of what NYC buyers need to know before choosing between Greenwich and Darien goes deeper on price bands and neighborhood fit. And if commute time is still weighing on you more than it should, this guide on how your NYC commute should shape your Greenwich home search walks through how to weigh it correctly against everything else.
It's Not Just Greenwich vs. Darien
Worth noting: this same commute logic shows up inside Greenwich, too.
Buyers comparing Old Greenwich against Riverside or weighing Old Greenwich against Cos Cob run into the exact same pattern — the train times are close enough that space, walkability, and price end up doing the real deciding.
If you take one thing from this: stop letting a 10-minute train difference eliminate a town before you've even toured it. Widen the search, compare the towns on the factors that actually shape your daily life, and let the commute be a tiebreaker instead of a filter.
That's exactly how I help NYC buyers work through the Greenwich-versus-Darien decision — pulling current inventory, real commute data, and neighborhood comps side by side so you're comparing what actually matters. If you're ready to see how Greenwich and Darien stack up for your specific situation, download the app or reach out directly — we'll build the comparison around your actual priorities, not just the train schedule.
